Coupon Guilt?

31 March 2011
Do you ever feel a bit guilty when you use a lot of coupons? Particularly competitors' coupons? Has someone else, cashier or another shopper, insinuated that you're doing something wrong?

Here's a quote from Ellie Kay's book, Shop, Save and Share:
... One store manager with eighteen years experience told me:
'It's hard to believe, Mrs. Kay, that we don't lose money on even someone like you. You would think that when a person only pays $35 for $150 worth of groceries, we would lose money. But the manufacturers reimburse us for their coupons and the store's marketing department reimburses us for double coupons and competitor's coupons. So coupons are just like cash to us. I will say that taking $115 in cash is a lot easier than taking $115 in coupons. Still, that's our job.'
'Nuff said?

God bless your budget!

Publix trip!

21 March 2011
It's been a little while since we posted about our grocery savings. Not that we haven't been doing some wondermous deals... it's jsut that, well, life be so daily. :) We're beginnning to get a bit of a reputation at our local Publix market. Tonight's list was very short, as we're pretty well stocked up with most of our needs, However, deals like these are just too hard to pass up.

We picked up:
2 packages of beef hot dogs
2 packages of turkey hot dogs
4 Kid Cuisine meals
2 cartons of Florida's Natural OJ
2 Philadelphia Cooking Cremes
2 packages of Vigo yellow rice
2 Reese's PB cups.

Coupons we used:
(2) Buy 1 Oscar Mayer beef hot dogs, get 1 OM turkey dogs free
(2) Buy OM hot dogs, get $1 off Publix produce
(1) Buy 3 OM hot dogs, get 1 free (Target coupon)
(1) Get 1 Philly Cooking Creme FREE
(1) $1.50 off one Philly Cooking Creme
(2) $1 off 2 Kid Cuisine meals
(2) 50¢ off Vigo yellow rice
(1) B1G1 PB cups (Target coupon)
(1) $5 off $25 purchase (CVS coupon)

Our grand total was $3.49; we saved $38.36! That's a 91.7% savings!
(Sorry we didn't get a picture. Long day, long trip home, rush to get frozen items put away.)

God bless your budget!

Our amazing Publix trip!!!

10 January 2011

We never would have thought, a year ago, that we'd ever be able to pull off a deal like this! Combining sales and coupons, we brought home 12 boxes of Special K, 20 jars of Peter Pan peanut butter, 4 packs of sausage, 2 Wholly Guacamoles, 6 ramen noodles, and 1.67 pounds of chicken! We saved $119.91. Our total OOP: $5.19!!!

We're finally starting to build up a nice little stockpile. The Duke has promised to 'build' us a little pantry as soon as he can wrangle some time off. (Not holding our breath, lol!)

God bless your budget!

Newspaperless experiment

09 December 2010
We've decided to stop buying Sunday papers for a while. We end up with huge stacks to haul to the recycle station in the next county. (Our county has no recycling program as yet). And, despite our good intentions, the unused/expired coupons don't regularly get sent to our military families.

So far, it's been working out better than we hoped. 'Buying' the coupons online reduces waste and makes it much easier/cheaper for us to stock up on items we use often. Example: we 'bought' 12 Idahoan coupons for a total, including shipping, of $2.07. Using the coupons during a BOGO, we got 24 FREE packages! This was a $30 value, so we're actually $27.93 ahead! Yes, we're thinking this experiment is going to be a monumental success. the pantry is filling up nicely and the grocery account is still in the black. Momma's happy! 8-]

Deals of the week!

06 August 2010
This has been one of our best weeks since we started hyper-couponing about 8 months ago! We finally made it to Staples on the last day of their free 'backpack' special and were delighted to find some very nice selections. Choosing one was quite difficult, but we did narrow it down to two. Then our shopping pal volunteered to put one in his cart so we could have both! The black one was half price and the tie-dye 25% off. We also used a 20% off coupon for the black one, which brought it down to $23.99... and we're getting a $29.99 rebate on it! CHA-CHING!

We also bought several other items, using Staples Rewards, that offered a rebate. So we now have a total - including cash back, Staples Rewards, and gift cards - of around $87.50 coming. Add to that a $10 Publix gift card from the Publix/ConAgra offer, $10 from Aveeno, and $4.96 from the lunch tote we got at Target. Can't wait for these to start rolling in!

Another AbFab deal was at Publix. We did this one three times. Each time, using five $1/2 coupons and the $5/10 ConAgra products Q, 10 bottles of Hunt's Ketchup (BOGO) gave us an overage of $1.25 toward other items! Twice, we opted for the Sabra Hummus (can't stop eating that stuff!) that was on sale and paid exactly $1.75, the cost of one ketchup, for everything! And at the end of the month, each use of our credit union ATM card has earned us 15¢. That came to over $40 this month! CHA-CHING!

Last, but certainly not least, for the final of several Friends and Family deals at Walgreens, we used a $25 Walgreens 'check' from a prescription transfer. Missing from the picture below are 6 more Big Rolls and 8 gallons of distilled water. We bought the 2 vitamins - which our insurance/wellness account paid for! - earlier in the day. Each one cost $7.50 and returned a $10 RR! CHA-CHING! We used the RR from one, along with a couple other RR's we had on hand, to pay for the Complete, one of the razors, and three Huggies wipes. (Almost forgot, we used a $4 coupon on each of the razors and combined store and MC's on the Huggies). The other $10 RR went to Publix for a few last minute deals on the final day of their sale.

Our final deal at Walgreens filled a cart and cost us exactly 13¢! Remember, we get 15¢ for using the ATM card, so we actually made a 2¢ profit! CHA-CHING!

OOP between Publix and Walgreens: $3.63.
RR's in our wallet right now: $23! CHA-CHING!!!!!
Oh, and we found that the cashier made some mistakes, so they owe us 75¢.

Also, we didn't even get a chance to post our CVS deals, which gave us a chance to roll some ECB's with a mere pittance, mostly tax, OOP. This is WAY working for us! :)

Who'da thunk, a year ago, we'd actually be buying more and paying less?! One of the very best things about this new lifestyle is 'buying' so many things we don't need. We've been able to donate quite a few items to the local 'children's home'. They tell us it's a blessing, but we truly believe we are blessed even more. We always leave their office with huge smiles and singing hearts!

OO! OO! Edit: Almost forgot the 2 Alive! coupons, making the vitamins $6.50 each; with a $10 RR per, those 2 alone netted us a $7 profit! CHA -CHING!

God bless your budget!

Another reason to love CVS! We scanned our card at the door and got a coupon for 50¢ off one Milky Way Simply Caramel, 3 Musketeers Truffle or Munch bar. The MW and 3M were on sale 2/$1, but they were out of 3M. We're not big MW fans, but the caramel was pretty nice. Even nicer since it was an actual money-maker for us! We paid 4¢ tax and got $1 ECB for our 4th green bag tag scan. AND we used our bank card, which will pay us another 15¢ come statement time! Pick up a candy bar, earn $1.11! That's our kinda shopping! 8-]

About Me

My photo
I'm a native-born Florida Cracker, graduated Christian home schooling mom/teacher, jill of all trades and mistress of none. Rising prices and dwindling assets pushed me over the edge from casual to extreme couponing. In the first quarter of 2010, we cut our grocery budget from $1600+/- to $300! I always thought all those 'coupon queen' stories weren't for average people like me. Was I ever wrong! Just jump in and start clipping. Check out some of the super savers in my blog list. Honestly, I know you've heard this before, but REALLY, if I can do it, ANYBODY can!
